How to portray and work with war-related experience beyond re-traumatization

Workshop

Workshop in Englischer Sprache

Relegating war experience to shocking bloody flashes of violence is not a strategy anymore to provoke empathy and/or political action, because of broad normalization of violence, especially in the media. Moreover, violence potentially provokes retraumatizing those who have relevant experience, which makes it impossible to process expe- rience into safe reflection and further political action. At the same time for those who don’t have relevant experience hyperrealism of violence could be just repulsive. Therefore, in this workshop we will have a look on what is on the periphery of attention and how it can be freed from power-knowledge hierarchy as much as possible. We will discuss how to use these findings as a potential field for reflections about violence beyond direct re-traumatizing. This workshop provi- des the possibility to come and practice together with the artist in the space of the installation. Through various artistic practices we will create the stories and postulate it’s value, while looking for possibili- ties of solidarity.
